- Waxing Gibbous: The moon is more than half-illuminated and appears to be growing.
- Full Moon: The moon is fully illuminated as it is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun.
- Waning Gibbous: The moon is more than half-illuminated but appears to be decreasing.
- Third Quarter: The moon is half-illuminated but appears to be 90 degrees from the sun.
- Waning Crescent: The moon is partially illuminated and appears to be decreasing as it sets in the western sky before sunrise.
